Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), commonly known as tapping, is a holistic healing method that combines elements of traditional Chinese medicine, acupressure, and psychology. It was developed in the 1990s by Gary Craig, based on the earlier work of Dr. Roger Callahan’s Thought Field Therapy (TFT).

EFT is designed to address emotional distress and negative thought patterns by tapping on specific meridian points on the body while focusing on the emotional issue at hand. The underlying theory is that emotional problems are caused by disruptions in the body’s energy system, and tapping on these points can help restore balance and alleviate emotional distress.

Here’s how EFT works:

  1. Identify the Issue: First, you identify the specific emotional or psychological issue you want to address. This could be anything from anxiety, fear, stress, phobias, traumatic memories, or negative beliefs.
  2. Setup Statement: Create a “setup statement” by acknowledging the issue and accepting yourself despite the problem. For example: “Even though I feel anxious about public speaking, I deeply and completely accept myself.”
  3. Tapping Sequence: While repeating the setup statement, use your fingertips to tap on specific acupressure points on the body. The main tapping points are on the head (top of the head, eyebrow, side of the eye, under the eye, under the nose, and under the chin) and on the upper body (collarbone, underarm). During the tapping, you can also voice the specific issue or negative emotion you’re addressing.
  4. Reevaluation: After completing a round of tapping, take a deep breath and reassess the intensity of the emotion or issue. Continue with additional rounds until the emotional distress significantly reduces or resolves.

The tapping process aims to release emotional blockages and create a shift in the way you experience the emotional issue. EFT can be practiced independently or with the guidance of a trained EFT practitioner.
