Outer Ear Infection or Otitis Externa or Swimmer’s ear

An outer ear infection happens in the ear canal which connect ear drum to the outside of the ear. This is also called Swimmer’s ear or Otitis Externa. While swimming water enters this area and that is why it is called Swimmer’s ear. Common symptoms are discharge of pus, itching, pain, fluid drainage, discomfort, diminished hearing etc. If it is not going in few days you must consult a doctor. Precautions you can take to avoid outer ear infections are using ear plugs in moisture atmosphere or while swimming. Some people say clear ear wax and other things using a cotton ball but doctors always recommend not to put any foreign objects to ears because it can create scratches in the sensitive skin in this area which can lead to more infections.

Middle Ear Infection or Otitis Media

Middle Ear, area behind the ear drum which contains tiny bones can be infected with bacteria mostly during winter season. This is also called Otitis Media. Common symptoms are healing loss, pain, fever etc. The eustachian tube that conenct middle ear to back of the throat, behind the nasal passages to regulate air pressure, drain secretions from middle ear. Swollen or inflammation or blocked eustachian tube can also leads to fluid buildup in the middle ear.

Inner Ear Infection

Inner ear infection happens due to the inflammation or infection in the inner ear parts. Symptoms are loss of balance, dizziness, nausea, hearing loss, pain, ringing in the ears or tinnitus, vertigo etc. Mostly inner ear infection happens due to a virus and some times bacteria too. Unlike outer and middle ear infections, inner ear infection can last for a long time. You must consult a doctor if your symptoms exist for few days.

Tinnitus or Ringing in Ears

Tinnitus is a very common ear disease affecting about 15% of population. It is a ringing sound heard in the head or ear when no external sound is present. There are many causes for tinnitus like earwax blockage, exposure to loud noise, Meniere’s disease, ear bone changes, Eustachian tube dysfunction etc. Some studies have found that reducing salt and caffeine, quit smoking can reduce tinnitus. More Zinc and Vitamin D intake also found beneficial.

Vertigo

Vertigo is another very common inner ear problem affection millions of people world wide. It is a feeling of movement when you are not moving similar to motion sickness or feel like entire room is spinning. The most common cause of vertigo is benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). Other causes are Meniere’s disease or Vestibular neuritis or labyrinthitis – a viral infection in the inner ear. Brain gets position of head from the three loop-shaped structures (semicircular canals) that contain fluid and fine. Meniere’s Disease

Meniere’s Disease is another type of inner ear diseases and it can cause vertigo and tinnitus. It is an inner ear disorder and can lead to buildup of fluid in the inner ear, especially in the labyrinth. Exact cause is still unknown but it is an abnormality in the way fluid of the inner ear is regulated.
